Savannah’s first ever Southern Half Marathon made its debut this weekend, and the turnout was huge. Nearly 4,500 runners took to the streets for a course that gave locals a fresh look at the city. The route wound through downtown and Midtown before wrapping up at Daffin Park, offering runners a chance to see Savannah from a totally different perspective.
One runner said a highlight was getting to pass through Grayson Stadium, home of the Savannah Bananas, with the crowd and volunteers creating “unreal energy.” They added that the volunteers were “incredible… enthusiastic and encouraging,” and that the final stretch, with the finish line party echoing in the distance, offered the perfect burst of adrenaline to close the race strong.
This year’s winners set the bar high for future races:
Both overall champions, Owen Allen and Kate McAndrew, put on standout performances, maintaining impressive pace and control from start to finish.
The 5K saw strong competition as well, with John Ball winning the race in 17:50 and Sarah Schultz taking the top female spot with a 19:59 finish.
For a first year event, the Savannah Southern Half Marathon felt anything but small. Big turnout, a fun course, and plenty of energy from start to finish — it’s safe to say this one made its mark.
