Governor Brian Kemp has signed off on the creation of an airport authority board in Bryan County, setting the wheels in motion for what could eventually become an $80 million airport project just outside of Richmond Hill.

The Richmond Hill-Bryan County Airport Authority Act was approved last week and establishes the governing body needed to begin planning and securing funding for the future facility. While a location hasn’t been finalized, early studies suggest a site just off I-95 near Exit 87, with the proposed property spanning more than 300 acres.

Local leaders say the airport would primarily serve general aviation traffic, helping ease pressure on the already busy Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport. Supporters argue that Bryan County's rapid population growth, booming industry (including the Hyundai Metaplant), and increased air traffic demand make the timing right for a secondary airport.

The proposed facility could house six T-hangars with space for 96 aircraft, and nearly half the project cost may be covered by federal funds. The rest would need to come from a mix of state, local, and private sources.

While the airport is still in the early stages, the legislation signals real momentum. For Bryan County, it’s another piece of infrastructure aimed at keeping pace with the region’s fast-changing growth.
