When Olympia Cafe closed its doors on New Year’s Eve after more than 30 years on River Street, it marked the end of one of Savannah’s longest-running restaurants. The closure came after the restaurant’s lease in the city-owned Gamble Building expired, with the property set for renovations and a new tenant selected through a public bidding process.
Now, the family behind Olympia is preparing to welcome guests once again.
Limani is expected to begin opening in phases this month at 417 E. River Street, just a short walk from Olympia’s former location. While the name and address are new, much of what made Olympia a local favorite is staying the same. The restaurant is owned by Vasilis Varlagas, who co-founded Olympia in 1994 alongside the late Nick Pappas, and will feature the same kitchen team and management that served customers for decades.
The transition marks a fresh start after an uncertain year that left many wondering whether Olympia would ever return to River Street. Although the original location will not reopen, Limani allows the restaurant’s legacy to continue in a new space along the waterfront.
To celebrate the new chapter, Limani is hosting a grand opening fundraiser on July 10, featuring a three-course dinner paired with wine. All proceeds from the evening will benefit Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. The restaurant is also expected to begin limited service as staff training continues, with full operations ramping up after its liquor license hearing.
