One of the most talked about weekends of the year on Tybee Island is back, as Orange Crush returns under the name Crush Reloaded this Saturday.
The event, which has roots going back to the late 1980s, began as a spring break gathering tied to Savannah State University students and has grown into one of the largest crowds Tybee sees each year. In recent years, it has also been one of the most debated events locally, with concerns around traffic, safety, and overall impact on the island.
For the second year in a row, the event is operating with an official permit, something that city leaders see as a step toward better organization and fewer issues. Last year’s event drew around 30,000 people and was generally viewed as more controlled compared to earlier years.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a setup similar to last year. There will be a main stage on the beach, along with DJs, performers, vendors, and designated areas for attendees. Outside vendors will not be allowed on the beach, and the event organizer is responsible for providing security, sanitation, and medical services.
Even with the permit in place, officials are preparing for a busy full weekend. Additional law enforcement will be on the island starting Thursday, with multiple agencies assisting. Traffic is expected to be one of the biggest challenges, especially later in the day on Saturday. The center lane on the main road will be blocked off for emergency vehicles, and parking will be limited across the island, including closures near the pier and along parts of Butler Avenue.
For anyone planning to go, arriving early and having a clear plan for transportation is key. Ride services and shuttle options will be available, but delays are expected as crowds build.
While the event continues to bring mixed opinions from locals each year, it remains one of the largest gatherings in the area. With more structure in place again this year, the focus will be on whether it continues trending toward a more organized and manageable weekend.
