Tybee Island’s plans for Solomon Park are taking another step forward, with the city seeking a contractor to install fencing for two new dog parks on the property.
One area would be for small dogs and the other for large dogs. They are planned for the roughly four-acre park at Polk Street and Solomon Avenue, with the fencing project listed at 89 Polk Street.
The new parks would replace Tybee’s two existing dog parks with larger, shaded spaces along the eastern edge of the property. The city’s current bid calls for about 1,020 feet of eight-foot-high chain-link fencing, along with separate entry areas and maintenance gates.
Each dog park would have a two-gate entry area where owners can take off a leash before entering the main enclosure. The fencing is being bid as its own project, with proposals due October 20.
The dog parks are only one piece of Solomon Park. The broader concept includes walking and biking trails, two marsh overlooks and pollinator gardens, turning the property into a community park that preserves much of its natural setting.
The city shared preliminary plans with residents earlier this year. The layout remains a concept rather than a finished park, and an opening date has not been announced.
