Savannah area concertgoers have a new option for live music. VyStar Pavilion at Anchor Park officially opened in Port Wentworth this month, bringing a new outdoor concert venue to the growing development just northwest of Savannah.
The pavilion is part of the larger 150 acre Anchor Park sports and entertainment complex, which is being developed as a new destination for concerts, sports, dining and other events. It sits roughly 20 minutes from downtown Savannah, making it close enough to draw audiences from across the area while giving Port Wentworth a major entertainment venue of its own.
VyStar Pavilion is a covered, open air amphitheater designed primarily for concerts and live entertainment. Published capacity figures have varied between 4,500 and 5,200 depending on the source and event configuration, putting it considerably below the roughly 9,500 seat Enmarket Arena. That smaller size gives the Savannah area another option for touring acts that fall somewhere between the area's smaller theaters and clubs and the larger arena.
Oak View Group, which operates and manages sports and entertainment venues around the country, manages the pavilion. Live Nation and C3 Presents are also involved in bringing touring acts to the new venue.
The pavilion held its first ticketed event with the Sunset Jazz Festival on August 1, and its early concert calendar already includes some recognizable names. Billy Currington and Kip Moore are scheduled for August 7, followed by Whiskey Myers on October 3 and Brantley Gilbert on October 8, with more shows expected to be announced.
And the pavilion is only one piece of what's coming to Anchor Park. The development will also include Ice Cove, a new hockey and training facility for the Savannah Ghost Pirates, along with the team's corporate offices. Plans also call for a 250 seat bar and grill, ice skating and hockey programs, multi use athletic fields and courts, and other recreational spaces. The hockey facility and restaurant are expected to be completed later this year.
For Port Wentworth, Anchor Park represents a significant shift toward becoming more of a destination for entertainment and recreation. With the pavilion now welcoming crowds and the rest of the complex still taking shape, the Savannah area has a brand new place to catch concerts, with plenty more still to come.
