Savannah Seeks Input on a New Trail Along Montgomery Cross Road

Savannah is considering a Tide to Town trail and streetscape changes along Montgomery Cross Road, with residents invited to help shape the plans.

Montgomery Cross Road could get a new walking and biking trail, along with changes to lighting, landscaping and the streetscape. Savannah is asking residents to weigh in on plans for the stretch between Sallie Mood Drive and Abercorn Street as the next phase of Tide to Town takes shape.

A community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. at STEM Academy at Bartlett, 207 E. Montgomery Cross Road. The session is open to everyone and will offer multiple options for the corridor rather than a finished design.

The discussion will cover multi-use trails, bicycle infrastructure, lighting, landscape improvements and safety features. Montgomery Cross Road currently has five lanes, limited sidewalks and landscaping, and no dedicated bicycle facilities. The city wants public feedback on how the road could work better for people walking and biking as well as those driving through.

The proposed trail would become part of Tide to Town, a planned network of protected walking and biking routes across Savannah and Chatham County. Its core route is expected to extend more than 30 miles, linking neighborhoods with schools, hospitals and other destinations through off-road paths and separated bike lanes.

Three completed segments along Truman Parkway already form a continuous seven-mile route from Police Memorial Trail to Lake Mayer Park. A separate Middleground Road segment, running from Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus to Montgomery Cross Road, is in design. The Montgomery Cross Road section remains in planning.

Residents can review the network and meeting information on the city’s Tide to Town project page ahead of the conversation.
