Maizal Sets November 9 Soft Opening in Savannah’s Starland District

Maizal is preparing to open a gluten-free Colombian café on Habersham Street in Savannah’s Starland District, serving arepas, bowls and desserts.

Maizal will hold its soft opening Monday, November 9, at the corner of Habersham and East 37th streets in Savannah. The gluten-free Colombian café scheduled a ribbon cutting for Thursday, November 5, ahead of the start of service.

Arepas are at the center of the menu. The round Colombian corn cakes come with fillings such as shredded beef, chicken, pork belly or egg and cheese. There are also bowls inspired by different regions of Colombia, along with cassava waffles with guava jam and tres leches cake.

Chef Mari Borr is opening the café with Big Bon Bodega owners Kay Heritage and Shahin Afsharian. Maizal started as a pop-up through Big Bon’s Ghost Kitchen before moving toward a permanent space. The new location has room for indoor and outdoor dining, with off-street parking.

Maizal is at 2018 Habersham Street. Along with coffee and food, the café plans to serve drinks like a coconut Cocada latte, tropical fruit smoothies and a guava matcha latte. The space will also be available for private events in the evenings.
