Leopold’s expects its Starland shop to open within weeks. An exact date hasn’t been announced.
The new ice cream shop is planned for 2400 Bull Street, taking over the former Lite Foot Company space. The mixed-use building also houses Brochu’s Family Tradition, F45 Training, Sola Salon and Garden Square, putting Leopold’s along an already busy stretch of Starland businesses.
The expansion brings another Savannah neighborhood into a business that started more than a century ago. Brothers George, Peter and Basil Leopold opened their first parlor in 1919 at Gwinnett and Habersham streets. Peter’s son, Stratton, later took over the family business while also building a career in film.
The flagship at 212 East Broughton Street opened in 2004, with pieces of the original shop brought into the new space. Those include the black marble soda fountain, wooden back bar and telephone booth. The ice cream is still made in Savannah using the family’s recipes.
Leopold’s also operates a shop at 107 Charlotte Road on Whitemarsh Island, along with a shop and kiosk at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The Bull Street addition will give residents another neighborhood location beyond Broughton Street and the islands.
