Sandfly’s Southern Soul has closed after about a year and a half, with new restaurant Belly’s Cuisine now open in the space.
After about a year and a half in business, Sandfly’s Southern Soul has officially closed its doors on Ferguson Avenue. But the restaurant space is not staying empty for long.
The restaurant’s owners announced in April that they would be stepping away from daily operations, citing personal and health related reasons. Their final day of service was April 30. In the same announcement, they shared that a new business, Belly’s Cuisine, would be taking over the location at 8511 Ferguson Ave.
Belly’s Cuisine officially opened on May 7 and appears to have gotten off to a strong start, even selling out on opening day according to social media posts from the restaurant.
The new restaurant is serving breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Breakfast runs until 10:30 a.m., with menu items including omelets, chicken and waffles, pancakes, breakfast bowls, salmon breakfast plates, biscuits and gravy, and liver and onions. Lunch specials rotate throughout the week and include soul food staples like fried chicken, pork chops, oxtails, smoked chicken, BBQ ribs, mac and cheese, collard greens, cabbage, fried okra, sweet potato soufflé, and red rice.
The new concept also has a connection to a familiar Savannah name. According to multiple social media posts, the kitchen is being run by Trina, who previously cooked at Holland House Savannah, alongside her daughter Chelsea, who now owns Belly’s Cuisine.
Meanwhile, the former owners of Sandfly’s Southern Soul say they plan to continue focusing on their barbecue sauce, grilling glaze, and spice blend business moving forward.
So while one chapter has closed rather quickly, another has already started in its place, with Belly’s Cuisine now officially open and operating in Sandfly.
